Abstract:
A comprehensive assessment of voice is multimodal and involves standardized and non-standardized tools: Patient Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMS); auditory-perceptual evaluation; and acoustic /aerodynamic measures of vocal efficiency, flexibility and perturbation (Roy et al., 2013). Smartphone Aps, spirometry and s/z’s— whether new or tired and true, several low-to-no-tech options are available for the screening, diagnosis and management of voice disorders. These tools may be used prior to or after laryngeal tract visualization to describe functional deficits and select primary outcome measures for therapy. Laryngeal imaging and evaluation by a physician are required prior to initiation of voice therapy (ASHA, 2026).
Learners will be required to complete a self assessment at the end of this course.
Objectives:
Compare and contrast formal vs. informal, standardized vs. non-standardized and low vs. no tech assessment tools for the evaluation of voice.
Describe how you might use some of low-to-no tech options when screening for or evaluating a voice disorder in your setting.
Provide voice assessment considerations for these specific patient populations: Pediatric Voice Disorder, Parkinson’s Disease, Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis and Laryngeal Dystonia
