This two-day workshop will aim to increase speech and language therapists’ knowledge and skills in assessing and treating early childhood stuttering. The course will cover the theory and practice of Palin Parent Child Interaction Therapy for young children and their families. The course will be supported by video, discussion and skills practice, and the clinical manual Practical Intervention for Early Childhood Stammering: Palin Parent-child Interaction Therapy (Kelman & Nicholas, 2008).

Course Description
This two-day workshop will aim to increase speech and language therapists’ knowledge and skills in
assessing and treating early childhood stuttering. The course will cover the theory and practice of Palin
Parent Child Interaction Therapy for young children and their families. The course will be supported by
video, discussion and skills practice, and the clinical manual Practical Intervention for Early Childhood
Stammering: Palin Parent-child Interaction Therapy (Kelman & Nicholas, 2008).

CEUs: This course is offered for 1.3 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level, Professional Area)
 
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course participants will be able to:
• describe a screening device to decide on care pathways for children who stutter.
• explain an assessment protocol for children under seven who stutter.
• explain the structure and content of Palin Parent Child Interaction (Palin PCI) therapy.
• describe options for assessing and treating children under seven who stutter.
 
Course Content
Day 1:
• A multifactorial model of stuttering (8:30-9:15)
• A brief research update – current research into the factors contributing to stuttering; vulnerability
to persistent stuttering; interaction styles & stuttering (9:15-10:15)
• A screening device for vulnerability to persistence and appropriate care pathways (10:30-11:15)
• Child Assessment - including brief fluency measurement (11:15-12:15)
• Case history taking and formulation about what contributes to the child’s stuttering and what the
individual child needs (1:15-2:30)
• Principles of Palin PCI (2:45-3:15)
• Palin PCI: Interaction Strategies; using the video in parent-child interaction therapy (3:15-4:30)
 
Day 2:
• Palin PCI: Interaction Strategies; using the video in parent-child interaction therapy – practical
session (8:30-9:30)
• Palin PCI: Family Strategies (9:30-10:15)
• Palin PCI: Family Strategies continued (10:30-11.30)
• Brief summary of evidence for Palin PCI (11:30-12:00)
• Palin PCI: Child Strategies including direct fluency therapy and managing co-existing speech and
language difficulties (1:00-2:30)
• Reflection of therapists’ skills and applications to clinical practice (2:45-4:30)
